Free ways to bolster SEO

Today, businesses are constantly competing to outrank competitors on key search engines through implementing a range of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) strategies. Paid advertising e.g., Google Ad Words is one of the most common tactics businesses use, however there are a number of under-utilised (& free) strategies that are just as, if not more, important for your business. Here, we’ll let you in on a few top tips to bolster SEO.

Website Copy

One of the best ways to bolster SEO is to use keywords throughout your website copy. Keywords are the words / phrases a customer would use when they search for your business. For example, if you’re an online candle company, a key phrase could be “where to buy candles online”.

Once you understand relevant key words for your business, you can integrate these words / phrases throughout your website. This communicates to the search engine (Google, Bing etc,) that your website may solve this prospective customer’s problem. Ultimately, search engines wany to make the research process is direct as possible, to keep people coming back.

It’s important to note that you can overuse key words / phrases, so you need to strike a healthy balance. You want to ensure your website copy flows naturally – this is where a copywriter trained in SEO can be very helpful for your overarching web strategy.

Blog posts

Updating your blog regularly is an important piece of the puzzle when it comes to boosting SEO. Think of your blog headlines as answers to your customer’s questions, Not only will this support your key word strategy, but providing relevant, high-quality content will also increase the time each person spends on your website – telling search engines that your site provides valuable information.

Regular (& consistent) blog updates also tell search engines that your website is up to date & active, which increases likelihood of your website being indexed.

Hot tip: aim for around 500 words for your blog posts. You want to provide valuable information to prospective customers, without going into so much depth that readers lose interest.

Use Meta Tags

Meta Tags are coded content pieces within your website that are only visible via the backend i.e., your customer can’t view meta tags. These tags tell search engines what your content is about. For example, you can include a meta description for a page of your website, explaining its key purpose in one sentence. The same applies for Media e.g., photos or videos.

Back-links

Back-links are links from another website that direct traffic to your website, which is the online equivalent of receiving a referral or recommendation. Securing mentions (with a URL) from other websites, particularly digital Media platforms, tells search engines that your site is trustworthy & therefore, boosts your overall search ranking.

PR can help your business achieve backlinks by securing online Media coverage in relevant titles, as well as landing blog / website reviews on relevant platforms.
